Blog Seven: Margaret Thatcher

“In politics if you want anything said, ask a man; if you want anything done, ask a woman.” –Margaret Thatcher

The quote is important to me because it shows the confidence women can have, especially in politics. Margaret Thatcher held years of power as Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. She reshaped the social and economic outlook of the country. What I love about this quote is the fact that it is possible for woman to rise to the highest office in politics and more important, to stay there. She accomplished this with a level of assertiveness rarely equaled by her male predecessors. As global citizens this is very crucial to point out because it is highlighting the fact that although countries have to treat each other equally, we need to treat both genders equally as well. Since governments lead countries, it is important to ensure that both genders have the chance to be apart of the government. I believe Margaret Thatcher has created a huge precedence for active female global citizens to feel confident and not be afraid of trying to be a true leader.

  1. What a great choice of a quote! I think it is a testament to Margaret Thatcher's strong character. She faced a lot of criticism in hard British times but she did not back down. She definitely got things done! :) Erin, what you spoke to regarding gender equality, specifically in politics, is a really important issue. Although women make up a little over 50% of the global population, the number of women who hold positions of power is much less than the expected 50%. Even in Canada, the number of women in politics was 22.4% in 2008...and that is our highest percentage ever.
I hope the world will continue to have female role models like Margaret Thatcher to inspire women around the globe to be politically active.

  2. Excellent quote! :) It is true and like Sarah said above, it is a true testament to Thatcher`s very strong character.
I agree with you, Erin, when you said that Margaret Thatcher has set huge precedent for female activits and global citizens around the world. Thatcher truly embodies the characteristics of a true leader. I wish we saw more of that in politics, today.

  3. Here's where I have to draw the line agreeing with you. I find this quote highly prejudicial and baseless. Thousands of workers suffered under Maggie Thatchers oppressive wage cuts and anti-union bills. Perhaps things may have been "done" but maybe not in the best interest of the citizens of the country.
